A number of 2SLGBTQIA+ issues are top of mind for Canadians in this year's federal election, and voters deserve to know where their local candidates stand.
Borderland Pride, Rainbow Collective of Thunder Bay, and Rainbow Alliance Dryden have jointly issued a questionnaire to the Liberal, Conservative, NDP, and Green candidates for the federal ridings of Thunder Bay-Rainy River, Thunder Bay-Superior North, and Kenora.
The survey consists of 6 questions, which canvass the candidates' views on topics such as:
Bill C-6, which failed to pass in the previous Parliament and would have criminalized so-called conversion "therapy";
Trans rights and whether healthcare or service providers should be able to decline service or referrals based on "conscience rights";
The discriminatory blood donation ban, which targets gay, bi, and trans men; and
Whether Canada is doing enough to protect queer and trans people in Afghanistan since the Taliban seized control.
The survey also provides candidates with an opportunity to explain how, if elected, they will use their office to address the daily challenges faced by 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and to describe what personal connections or involvement they have with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community or 2SLGBTQIA+ issues.
The deadline for the candidates' responses is September 10. All of the responses will be published online and distributed to media shortly thereafter.
The organizers will not be endorsing any candidates, but trust that their community members will find the responses informative as they make their decisions at the ballot box.
